My Story

Marketing used to be advertising.

Now, marketing is everything you do. And what you do either adds to the experience or takes away from it.

Seth Godin

As a young marketing graduate I moved from country Queensland to the big smoke of Melbourne. There I spent 15 years managing advertising campaigns, complex IT products and strategic planning forums for Australia’s biggest telco.

When I had my kids I hit a fork in the road. I could either stay and do the family/work juggle in a work culture of 40+ hours a week, or focus on my family. I chose the latter, and set out to design a career around my role as mum and wife. (In other words, be the head of everything and everyone at my place.)

So I decided not to return from maternity leave after my second child, and left behind my life as a corporate chick. I walked out the big glass doors without a lanyard around my neck, and hung up my suit when I got home.

It felt strange. The road I’d been on for so long had ended.

And now it was just me.

Then I had the idea to move into freelancing, and work with small businesses to improve their marketing.

It was a slow start. Until my kids went to school, they were my focus. I just couldn’t manage two toddlers at my feet while trying to punch out award-winning marketing strategies at my desk.

Through word of mouth, I picked up my dream client early on (patient and super appreciative). And I could experiment with new marketing tools that my corporate experience hadn’t given me.

I soon realised a crucial piece to my dream client’s success was having an online presence that matched who they were offline. So I needed to quickly learn the new ways of digital marketing.

I got busy and:

  • Added SEO to my portfolio of skills (shaping websites to suit people and Google)
  • Learnt WordPress by building a few websites
  • Put myself and my brand out there on social media
  • Developed a mild addiction to Google Analytics
  • Networked with peers and really clever folk
  • More than tripled the revenue growth for my dream client
  • Received positive feedback from many clients for:
    • bringing them clarity
    • helping them take next steps to better marketing
    • improving their revenues and overall marketing performance.

I also made time for obstacle course racing and 4WD camping adventures around Australia.

Some days feel like I’ve got the best job in the world.

Guess what happened next?

My new skills reignited my enthusiasm for the power of marketing done well. I now have the advantage of supercharging the latest digital tools with solid marketing principles from my traditional marketing background.

I now focus on designing practical, affordable and doable marketing solutions for overwhelmed businesses who don’t know where to start, or just don’t have the resources.
